Drive-Thru Civil Rights: The Strange Story of Fast Food and Freedom Struggles

In this presentation, historian Marcia Chatelain, Ph.D., will talk about the stories that didn’t make it into her Pulitzer Prize winning book Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America. The post-1968 civil rights era presented a series of challenges to activists, bureaucrats, and everyday community members who constantly searched for solutions to the pressing problem of racial injustice. By pivoting to embrace business as a tool for social justice, the fast food industry was able to enter and influence various urban communities.

Terrorism and Counterterrorism

In light of the death of al-Qaida’s leader Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri in August 2022, what is next for the group and the counterterror options against it? Most elements of counterterrorism strategy address one of two goals: disrupting the group itself or changing the environment to defuse the group’s anger in order to make it harder to raise money or attract recruits. Join Elizabeth Grimm, Ph.D., associate professor of teaching in the Security Studies Program at Georgetown, as she addresses some of the strategies currently considered by the U.S. government in order to tackle the problem of al-Qaida, as well as the costs and benefits of those strategies.

Celebrating the Justice and Peace Studies (JUPS) 30th Anniversary

Ever wonder about the many trees that are on the Hilltop? Join Biology Professor Edd Barrows to meet and learn more about some of Georgetown’s special trees on campus. His students have been studying these trees as class projects in two of his courses. Professor Barrows started at GU on July 1, 1975, and will officially retire on July 1, 2023.

Join Georgetown’s Astronomical Society in an Open House at the third oldest university observatory in the United States!

Founded in 1841 as part of a nascent worldwide network of Jesuit-run astronomical observatories, the Georgetown College Observatory of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., has been home to more than 125 years of astronomical research, from Father Curley’s calculations of the latitude and longitude of D.C. to Father McNally’s award-winning solar eclipse photography.

The Georgetown University Astronomical Society was founded in 1972 by a group of students dedicated to continuing astronomy and preserving the observatory on campus. The club retains full responsibility for the maintenance and use of the first floor and dome of the building. GUAS dedicated itself to the pursuit of amateur astronomy and strives to carry on Father Heyden’s legacy in education and service to the student body and the public.

Come join the Georgetown Program Board for a screening of Ocean’s 8. Free snacks will be provided, as well as a free AMC movie ticket raffle. There will be four showings throughout the weekend: Friday 10/7 at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., Saturday 10/8 at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Note: the Healey Family Student Center (HFSC) Film Screening Room is located on the second floor of the HFSC. If entering the building near Leo’s (Northwest Entry on this floor plan) or New South (North Entry on the linked floor plan), turn left once inside down the main hallway (Promenade) and walk to the staircase (Grand Stair), or just a little further to the passenger elevator. Go up the one floor, and the HFSC Film Screening Room will be on the left of the stairs or straight ahead of the elevators. The Film Screening Room can be accessed on either side of it, with the primary entrance being next to the doors on the second level of the HFSC leading outside to Village A.

The Mr. Georgetown pageant is a longstanding tradition organized by the Georgetown Programming Board every year on the Friday of Homecoming Weekend. It features approximately 20 seniors, all representing different clubs on campus, competing for the title of Mr. Georgetown by showcasing their talents in a variety of segments. Tickets will go on sale via CampusGroups in late September, and interested students should follow GPB (@gtownpb) for more information.

This time-honored tailgate tradition returns for the first time in three years, once again bringing Hoyas together for food, music, and general camaraderie before the Homecoming football game kicks off. Join fellow alumni, current students, family, and friends as we enjoy a fall day on campus with barbeque, drinks, pizza, entertainment, and more! Please note that the tailgate ticket does not include admission to the football game.

Students – The Homecoming Football game is free for students to attend. Please be prepared to show your GoCard at the gates to receive free entry and note that the game is first come first serve, both in terms of seat selection and capacity!

Each year during Homecoming Weekend, current undergraduates are joined by alumni at the Annual George E. Hamilton Alumni Debate. This unique debate allows for alumni of all ages to engage with current students in the Philodemic Society. The President of Alumni Philodemica presides over this special debate in which there is no seniority. After the debate, the Hamilton Medal is awarded to the undergraduate speaker who best represents the Society by pursuing “eloquence in the defense of liberty” in their speech that day.
