The 2 p.m. lecture will feature Professor Benjamin Harbert.

Rock and Roll History and the Cold War

Why does rock sound the way it does? This lecture traces the music back to the Cold War. We’ll follow Jack Mullin, an Army Signal Corps engineer who brought captured German tape recorders home after World War II and helped launch the magnetic tape revolution in American recording. We’ll look at how Sputnik set off a wave of federal investment in science and higher education, filling college campuses with the generation that would become rock’s most devoted audience. Along the way, we’ll meet the early engineers and musicians who turned military technology into the sound of popular music, and we’ll consider how rock made Cold War technologies feel like a natural part of everyday life.

As the undergraduate student kick off Homecoming Weekend, Traditions Day is the perfect way to celebrate Georgetown. The student-run 1634 Society leads this introduction to the many traditions that make the Hilltop home for so many Hoyas.
