As the undergraduate student kickoff to Homecoming Weekend, Traditions Day is the perfect way to celebrate Georgetown. The student-run 1634 Society leads this introduction to the many traditions that make the Hilltop home for so many Hoyas. More details to come soon, but students can expect food, performances, fun, and an event you won’t want to miss!

The Russia-Ukraine War

On February 24, 2022, Putin’s Russia invaded Ukraine with the intent to control its government and people. The impact has been devastating for Ukraine, Russia, the region and the globe; the way the war might end remains unclear. This lecture seeks to comprehend the Russia-Ukraine war by examining four themes: 1) the causes and consequences of the war; 2) historical trends in war termination; 3) U.S. grand strategy toward Russia; 4) and finally, institutions designed to achieve security—the UN, OSCE, NATO—where they fall short, and how they or a new institution might secure the peace.

Cupcakes/Pies/Power

Using cupcakes and the pies as our starting points, this lecture will examine the intersections of food and culture in the greater Washington, D.C. area and beyond. Starting with an overview of food and culture in anthropological thinking and theory, we will move on to a consideration of the cupcake and the pie as symbols of identity, political economy, gentrification, gender, and power in Washington, D.C. Through the lens of the cupcake, for example, we will investigate why cupcakes have become such popular items of consumption, and what this conspicuous consumption tells us about how people think about themselves, the city, and the meaning of food in their lives. We will do the same with pies, and compare and contrast the consumption of each.

Come to watch Georgetown’s two most prominent political groups in their annual battle for athletic supremacy on Healy Lawn! Georgetown Bipartisan Coalition will be co-sponsoring the event and refereeing the game.

Hidden in Nature: Insights, Solutions, and Warnings for Humans

In the past few decades, we have become increasingly disconnected from nature. At the same time, the natural world has been increasingly threatened and damaged by humans. The consequences of these changes are profound, impacting even those of us who are not nature-lovers. This lecture will focus on what we stand to gain by paying closer attention to the natural world and the perils of ignoring it. We will explore examples of what we can learn from nature, and how these lessons can help us address global challenges like emerging infectious disease, food and water security, and extreme wildfires.

Join Hoya alumni, students, family, and friends as we celebrate the moments and experiences that make the Hilltop home! Grab a delicious bite to eat at the GU Farmers Market, challenge a fellow Hoya to a race through an inflatable obstacle course, and experience those quintessential Georgetown moments of friends, food, music, and more while relaxing on the lawn. Be sure to check out our student band, Kicking Cans, performing live at 5:00 PM!

Join the Black Alumni Council for a special gathering celebrating 50 years since our alumni and student communities first gathered on the Hilltop during Homecoming. Come build on that history, connect across generations, and learn more about the Black Alumni Council’s ongoing initiatives and what’s happening on campus from student leaders. Light appetizers and soft drinks will be served.

Join us for an outdoor movie screening on Healy Lawn, this year showing Monsters, Inc.! The movie will begin at 7:15 p.m. so be sure to come early to come secure a spot on the green, grab snacks, and get comfortable! Blankets and lawn chairs are encouraged! Free snacks will be provided while supplies last.

The Mr. Georgetown pageant is a longstanding annual tradition organized by the Georgetown Program Board. It features seniors representing different clubs and organizations on campus competing for the title of Mr. Georgetown by dancing, showcasing their talents, and wowing the crowd. Open to all students and alumni, the annual George E. Hamilton Debate brings together alumni of all ages to engage with current students in the Philodemic Society. After the debate, the Hamilton Medal is awarded to the undergraduate speaker who best represented the Society by pursuing “eloquence in the defense of liberty”.
